Margaret was born about 1414 in Seton, East Lothian, Scotland. Margaret's father was William De Seton and her mother is Janet Dunbar. Her paternal grandparents were John De Seton and Catherine St Clair; her maternal grandparents were George Dunbar and Christina Seton. She had a brother and three sisters, named George, Catherine, Janet and Marian. She was the second youngest of the five children. She had a half-sister named Margaret.
