His paternal grandparents are Alexander Saint John and Jane Lenthroppe Dalyson; his maternal grandparents are Thomas Neale and Goditha Throckmorton. He had a brother and four sisters, named Thomas, Margaret, Agnes, Frances and Judith. He was the third oldest of the six children.
