Nicholas was born in 1540 in Wingrave, Buckinghamshire, England. Nicholas' father was John Putnam and his mother was Pygott Margaret. His paternal grandparents were Richard Puttenham and UNKNOWN Joan. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Richard, Thomas, Daughter, Joan and Margaret.
