Hugh was born about 1366 in Ardossan, Ayrshire, Scotland. Hugh's father was John Alexander De Montgomery and his mother is Elizabeth Eglinton. His paternal grandfather was Alexander Montgomery and his paternal grandmother is Margaret Douglas; his maternal grandparents were Hugh Eglinton and Egidia Stewart.
