His paternal grandparents were Alexander Montgomerie and Margaret Boyd; his maternal grandfather was Adam Hepburn and his maternal grandmother is Janet Borthwick. He had two brothers and a sister, named Robert, Hugh and Margaret. He was the second oldest of the four children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Alexander and Elizabeth.
