John was born about 1104 in Dunham Massey, Cheshire, England.  John's father was Hamon Massey and his mother was Margaret Sacie.  His paternal grandparents are William De Massey and Muriel De Conteville. He had two brothers named Hamon II and Robert.  He is the youngest of the three children.
