Roger was born in 1027 in Normandy, France. Roger's father was Anschitil De Harcourt and his mother was Eve De Boessey. His paternal grandfather is Turchetil De Harcourt and his paternal grandmother was Adeline De Montfort. He had seven brothers and a sister, named Anguerrand, Jean, Arnoul, Gervais, Ives, Robert, Ranaud and Agnes. He was the oldest of the nine children. He had a half-brother named Philip.
