Rosamund was born in 1136 in Clifford Castle, Herefordshire, England. Rosamund's father was Walter FitzRichard De Clifford and her mother was Margaret De Toeni. Her paternal grandparents are Richard FitzPontz and Maude De Pitres; her maternal grandparents were Ralph IV De Toeni and Judith Alice Huntingdon. She had eight brothers and two sisters, named Henry, Richard, Walter II, Robert, Roger, Simon, Hugh, William, Amica and Lucia. She was the second oldest of the eleven children.
