Roger was born about 1168 in Clifford Castle, Hertfordshire, England. Roger's father was Walter II De Clifford and his mother is Agnes De Condet. His paternal grandparents were Walter FitzRichard De Clifford and Margaret De Toeni; his maternal grandfather was Roger De Condet and his maternal grandmother is Alice De Chesney. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Walter III, Giles, Richard, Simon, Maud, Basilia and Cecilia. He was the oldest of the eight children.
