Hugh was born about 1339 in Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, Scotland. Hugh's father was David De Barclay and his mother is Margaret Brechin. His paternal grandfather was David De Barclay; his maternal grandparents are David Brechin and Margaret De Bonkyl. He had a brother and a sister, named David and Jean.
