Tappan was born on May 15th, 1797 in Newton, New Hampshire. Tappan's father was David Sargent and his mother was Sarah Favor. His paternal grandparents were David Sargent and Janney Eastman. He had three brothers and a sister, named John, Timothy Favor, Joseph Favor and Nancy. He was the third oldest of the five children. He died at the age of 68 on October 21st, 1865 in Salisbury, Massachusetts. He was buried in Amesbury, Essex County, Massachusetts.-
