John Elkins was born on January 4th, 1821 in Wheelock, Caledonia County, Vermont. John Elkins' father was Dominicus Sargent and his mother was Joanna Miles. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Sargent and Miriam Tucker. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Charles, Frederick Levenworth, Homer, Lorenzo, Susan, Elmira, Mary, Hannah, Sarah and Charlotte. He is the third youngest of the eleven children.-
