Benjamin was born on October 13th, 1762 in Amesbury, Essex County, Massachusetts. Benjamin's father was David Sargent and his mother was Martha Wells. His paternal grandparents were Charles Sargent and Hepzibah Heath. He had two brothers and nine sisters, named Joseph Wells, David, Hannah, Rhoda, Sarah, Martha, Alice, Elizabeth, Mary, Ruth and Hephzibah. He was the fourth oldest of the twelve children.
