Samuel was born on October 15th, 1756 in Newton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire and his baptism took place on May 6th, 1757 in Amesbury, Essex, Massachusetts. Samuel's father was Moses Colby and his mother was Sarah Sargent. His maternal grandparents were David Sargent and Mary Goodwin. He had three brothers and a sister, named Moses, Hezekiah, Archelaus and Hannah. He was the third oldest of the five children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Sargent, Barzillai and Susannah. He died in Weare, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire.-
