Gardenier, Jacob Janse came from Kampen, Overijasel, Hollan
d on "den Harinck (The Herring) arriving at New Amsterdam
, March 28, 1638. He was a carpenter and had a saw and gris
t mills at Greenbush, opposite Albany in 1647 and leased th
e mill at Bethlehem, February 2, 1654. His alias was "Flodd
er"
His son Albert Jacobse, carpenter, was in Beverwyer in 1677
. Hendrick Jacobse Gardenier had a son Hendrick born in Alb
any on August 18, 1686.

One of New Netherland's most enterprising and successful pi
oneers was Jacob Jansen Flodder or Gardenier, who hailed fr
om the small city of Campen in the Province of Overysel.
Settling in the colony of Rensselaerswych as a humble carpe
nter without capital, without influential or wealthy friend
s, without the good will of the Patroon, even, he made wa
y by the sheer force of his character, and generally correc
t judgement, so at the time of his death, prior to 1688, h
e left a considerable estate, and his operations had extend
ed all the way from Rensselaerswych to New Amsterdam.......
