His paternal grandparents were David Keeler and Mary St John; his maternal grandparents were Stephen Betts and Ruth Brinsmade. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Ezra, Hezikiah, Boy, Caleb, Ira, Molly and Anne. He was the second oldest of the eight children. He had eleven half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Hezekiah, Justus, Peter, Daniel, Stephen Betts, Harry, Ebenezer, Zerviah, David, David, Ira, Abigail, Esther and Martha.
