His paternal grandparents are John Daniels and Abigail; his maternal grandparents were Barney G Codner and Eve Bienema. He had eleven brothers and two sisters, named Samuel A, Lemuel, Alfred, Francis M, Frank, Richard R, Eugene, Martin, Cyrus Wesley, Wesley, William Esli, Lida and Lydia Daniels. He is the youngest of the fourteen children.-
