Matilde was born about 0999 in Saxony, Germany. Matilde's father was Bernard I Billung and her mother was Hildegarde Von Stade. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Bernard II Billung, Thietmar, Godesti and Imma. She was the second oldest of the five children. She had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Otto, Hermann and Gertrud.
