Although his third wife was Aelfgifu, daughter of Aethelred The Unready, Ughtred showed wavering support for the King and in 1013 submitted to the Danish invader Swein Fordbeard. He appears subsequently to have backed the cause of Aethelred's son, Edmund Ironside, but in 1016 was forced to surrender to Cnut.
