Hawise was born about 1080 in Wigmore, Shropshire, England.  Hawise's father was Ralph De Mortimer and her mother was Melisende or Milicent.  She was an only child.

They had three sons and four daughters, named Ingelran, Stephen, William 'le Gros', Beatrice, Adelisa, Agnes and Matilda.
