Gerhard was born in Auvergne, Aquitaine, France.  Gerhard's father was Renaud De Poitiers.  He was an only child.  He died in Battle of Fontenoy, Fontenoy, Yonne, France.

‌Gerhard and Hildegarde were married in a religious ceremony about 0819.  They had two sons and a daughter, named Ranulf I of, Gerhard II of and Daughter of Gerhard.
