Walter was born about 1190 in Buchan, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Walter's father was William Comyn of Buchan and his mother was Sarah FitzHugh. His paternal grandparents were Richard of Badenoch Comyn and Hextilda FitzHuchtred; his maternal grandfather was Robert FitzHugh. He had a brother and a sister, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Richard, Jean and FNU. He had two half-brothers and three half-sisters, named John, Alexander, Idoine, Margaret and Elizabeth.-
