Adherent of the party of Prince James (later James IV), the castle of Airth was attacked by royal forces in 1488. 'In 1488-89 he had a recept for a certain sum in the Lord Treasurer's accounts "to the byggin of his place of Ercht that was byrnt, c ti" before he battle of Sachie by the forces of James III.'
