Alace L. was born about 1870. Alace L.'s father was John G. Bates and her mother was Martha A. McClure. Her paternal grandparents were William Bates and Christeena Carpenter; her maternal grandparents were John McClure and Maria Ann McDowell. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Elbert N., Hanibal J., Rufus D., Ella A. and Adda F.. She was the second oldest of the six children.-
