Walter was born in 1105 in Paisley Abbey, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Walter's father was Baron Alan FitzFleald de Hesdin of Oswestry and his mother is Heiress Avelina de Hesding of Shropshire. His paternal grandfather was Baron Flaald FitzAlan of St. Florent and his paternal grandmother is Aveline de Hesdin of Norton; his maternal grandparents are Ernulf de Hesding and Emmeline de Normandie. He had a brother named William. He was the younger of the two children. He died at the age of 72 in 1177.General Notes

Walter Fitzalan was of Breton descent, a powerful baron, receiving land from Prince David upon David's return to Scotland. After David was crowned as David I, King of Scotland, he named Walter Fitzalan as the High Steward of Scotland where he served until David's death, through the rule of Malcolm IV and at least into that of William I of Scotland.
Walter Fitzalan died c1177; burial info is unknown.
