Maud was born about 1146 in Nether Stowey, Bridgwater, Somerset, England. Maud's father is Walter de Candos of Goldcliff and her mother is Heiress Isabel de Epaigne of Nether Stowey. Her paternal grandfather was Robert de Candos and her paternal grandmother is Emma; her maternal grandfather was Alvred de Epaigne of Turnworth, Nether Stowey. She was an only child.
