Proetus' father is King Abas of Argos and Abae and his mother is Ocaleia. His paternal grandparents are King Lynceus of Argos and Hypermnestra; his maternal grandfather is Mantineus. He has a brother named Acrisius. He has a half-brother and a half-sister, named Akrisios and Eidomene.
They have two daughters named Lysippe and Iphianassa.
