Bertha was born about 1054 in Vlaardingen, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands.  Bertha's father was Count Floris I of Holland and her mother was Princess Gertrude of Saxony.  Her paternal grandparents were Dirk III of Holland and Princess Otelhild; her maternal grandparents were Duke Bernhard von Saxony II and Elika von Schweinfurt. She had a brother and a sister, named Dirk and Adele Chretienne.  She was the second oldest of the three children. She had a half-sister named Gertrude.  She died in Montreuil-sur-Loire, , France.

‌Bertha and "the Fair" were married in a religious ceremony in France.  They had a son and a daughter, named "the Fat" and Constansia.
