Thomas was born in 1821 in Vermont, USA.  Thomas' father is Thomas Merritt and his mother is Mary UNKNOWN. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, Benjamin, Abraham, Betsy S. and Sylvia.  He is the second oldest of the six children.
