The Dunbars were from Scotland and the first known Dubar in St. Mary's County was John Dunbar who made his will in 1709. We don't find his name on the early passenger lists to Maryland, but we do know that in the 1650s the fist political prisoners from the Scottish Rebellion were sent here by King Charles II. The names of those on that first ship are not available. These political exiles were required by the King to be sold for seven years servitude. Perhaps the father of the above John Dunbar was exiled for fighting for his religious freedom and beliefs. This John Dunbar was born c. 1669 and his will of 1709 says he has two sons and three daughters, but only names William, Mary and Sara. He left his family the dwelling plantation and the tan-yards. I am not sure what that means unles perhaps he was a tanner.
