Jan Gerretsen was born in 1639 in <Nieuw Amersfoort/Flatlands, Breukelen/Kings, Nieuw Nederland/New York>. Jan Gerretsen's father was Garret Gerrit Wolferse Vankouenhoven and his mother was Aeltje "Albie" Cornelis Cool. His paternal grandparents were Wolfert Garretse Van Couwenhoven and Neeltgen Jacobsdr; his maternal grandparents were Cornelis Cool and Aeltjen Braconie, Brackhonge. He had a brother and a sister, named Wolfert Gerretse van Couwenhoven and Neeltje Gerretsen. He had two half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Elbert, Gerret Elbertz, Marretje Gerritse Van, Heiltie and Achje. He died in Brooklyn, Kings, New York.General Notes

eformed Dutch Church of Brooklyn in 1677 and 1685. He resided at Brookl
yn Ferry. He was a commissioner of Brooklyn, 1690, by act of Court of Gen
eral Sessions, of which he was at that time a grand juryman."

as a farmer and a member of the Reformed Dutch Church in Brooklyn, whe
re he resided at Brooklyn Ferry. In his father's estate, he was willed mo
re than his older brother, William, because he was handicapped by being la
me. He became a prominent official in the government of New Netherland
s, being for some time a member of Governor Leister's council and a memb
er of the Court of Exchequer of New Amsterdam. He lived to be eighty-fi
ve years of age, until 1724."
