John White 
John was born about 1596 in Shalford, Essex, England and his baptism took place on December 16th, 1642 in Sheepscott, Kittery, Maine. John's father was Robert White and his mother was Bridget Algar. His paternal grandparents were Robert White and Alice Wright. He had a brother and three sisters, named Daniel, Sarah, Mary and Elizabeth. He was the second youngest of the five children. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Nathaniel, Elizabeth, Bridgett and Anna (Rosanna). He died on January 23rd, 1684 in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut. Carman; A Supplement to Memorials of Elder John White, 6Came over with Re
v. Thomas Hooker to Cambridge, Massachusetts. Moved toHartford and then H
adley. Sailed on the "Lion" 6/22/1632 and arrived in Boston 9/16/1632. H
is original homelot and cow yard in Cambridge is now occupied by "Gore Ha
ll" the Harvard library. Was a Freeman 3/4/1633, selectman 1635. Moved wi
th Hooker to Hartford 6/1636. Was an original proprietor. His house w
as in the shadow of the original Hartford "charter oak". Was selectman f
or Hartford in 1642, 1646, 1651, 1656. After the death of Rev. Hooker in 1
647, dissension began in the church between Reverend Stone, the new minist
er and the members of the church. This continued until April of 1659 wh
en sixty settlers of Hartford, Wethersfield and Windsor signed an agreeme
nt to move up the Connecticut River into western Massachusetts and establi
sh the town of Hadley. Elder John's name was fifth on this agreement a
nd he was named to the committee to "lay out lands and highways" a
nd to do other town business. When Hadley was organized, he was chos
en as Selectman in 1662, 1663 and 1665. In 1664 and 1669, he served as Dep
uty to the General Court of Massachusetts, sitting in Boston. He serv
ed as Elder in the Church in Hadley until 1670 when dissension in the Fir
st Church of Hartford had again divided the membership and a new chur
ch of South Hartford was established. John White moved back to Hartford a
nd became a member of South Church under the ministry of Rev. John Whitin
g. John was chosen Elder of this church and is mentioned in the church rec
ords as arbitrator and councilor in church matters.
