Rudolf renamed this enlarged kingdom, stretching from Basel to t he Mediterranean and from the modern Italian-French border to the Sarne-Rh one, the kingdom of Arelate (after the city of Arles); by the twelfth cent ury, the term "Burgundy" was reserved for the county and the duchy. After Rudolf II there followed a series of weak monarchs on the Burgu ndian throne, and when Rudolf III died without an heir in 1032, the kingd om passed over to the GERMAN EMPERORS."
