III was born in Haute-Alsace, France.¹ III's father was II, the Mefiant, of Tours Hugh Count and his mother was of Upper Alsace Aba Countess. His paternal grandparents were II, of Upper Alsace Luitfrid Count and of Upper Alsace Hiltrude Countess. He had a brother and three sisters, named I, of Bourges Hugh, of Tours, of Tours and of Orleans. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Tortulfe or Hugh, Hermengarde and UNKNOWN.¹
