His paternal grandparents were Thomas Sr GILPIN and Dorothy GIBSON; his maternal grandfather was Thomas BARTHOLOMEW and his maternal grandmother is Mrs-Thomas BARTHOLOMEW. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Isaac, Joseph, Richard, Mary, Sarah and Rachel Ann. He was the second oldest of the seven children.
