Captain William Fowler, the son of William Fowler, the "magistrate" did n
ot participate with his father in the settlement of Milford, but remain
ed at New Haven, where he took the oath of fidelity, 1644. and was admitt
ed to the General Court .. 1645. He was a land holder at New Haven, whe
re he was living, 1655. East Haven, "Fowler's Cove," and "Fowler's Creek
," now so-called were named from him. About two miles from New Haven, n
ow the village of Whitneyville, and on the site of the establishment for t
he manufacture of fire-arms, erected by Eli Whitney, the inventor of the c
otton gin, Mr. Fowler built a mill, 1645. which the town bought of hi
m, 3d of January, 1659, for one hundred pounds. He was chosen successivel
y, "Sergeant," "Lieutenant," and "Captain," of the "Town Company" and is m
entioned in the Colonial Records of Hartford and New Haven, as one to rai
se troops as a defence against a threatened incursion of the Dutch. He fir
st m., as early as 1645, Mary dau. of Edward and Ann Tapp, sister of Ja
ne Tapp, wife of Governor Treat, by whom were born to him all his childre
n. He m. 2d, Nov. 1st, 1670, at Milford, widow Elizabeth (Alsop) Baldwi
n. She was living at the date of his death, and as we learn from his wil
l, was a "tender, dutiful and loving wife," and he desired that she mig
ht continue to "live with his children, to be a guide and help them as a m
other, and head of a family." He removed and settled at Milford, about t
he time of his father's death, 1660, where a portion of his children we
re born and baptized.
His will is dated 3d October, 1682, and probated, June, 1683. He gives pro
perty to "his eldest son John, to encourage him to tend the mill bui
lt by his father."
