John was born in 1689 in New Kent Co, VA, USA. John's father was Thomas S Tinsley and his mother was Sarah Jackson. His paternal grandparents were Thomas S Tinsley and Elizabeth Randolph; his maternal grandparents were Isaac Jackson and Jane Gullocke. He had six brothers and four sisters, named Thomas S, David, Phillip, Edward, Cornelius, William Isaac, Ann, Alice, Sicily and Mary. He was the fourth oldest of the eleven children.
