Abijah was born in 1757 in South Carolina. Abijah's father was Richard Whitt and his mother was Susannah Skaggs. His maternal grandparents were James Skaggs and Rachel Unknown. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Hezekiah, Archibald, Robert, Richard, Edmund, Rachel, Elizabeth, Ruth and Sussanah. He is the oldest of the ten children.-
