Campbell was born in 1829 in Kentucky. Campbell's father was Jeremiah Warren and his mother is Mary Martin. He had four brothers and a sister, named Allen, Jeremiah Ivy , Jr., Colonel Dee, Willis Green and Clarrisia. He is the oldest of the six children.
Campbell and Mary were married in a religious ceremony on November 15th, 1852 in Kentucky. They had two sons and two daughters, named Moses Samuel, William A., Claressa E. and Mary E..
