M. I. was born in LaGrange,Fayette Co. Tx.. M. I.'s father was Benjamin S. Purcell and his mother was Besty Anderson. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Purcell and Ann Brewer. He had three brothers and a sister, named William Charles, Corneilus, Charles McLain and Elizabeth. He had seven half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Benjamin, Samuel Bruer, Aaron L., Peter Reisinger, Daniel Elisah, Calvin, Noah, Rachel Marie, Sarah Ann and Rebecca.-
