Clayton J. was born in 1855. Clayton J.'s father was Joseph P. Philo and his mother was Arvilla Hall. His paternal grandparents were Jonathan Benedict Philo and Sarah Anne Smalley. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Levi H., Alrugoa J., Joshua P., Adelbert, Levi Joseph, D., Almira, Rosilla and Artemesia. He is the third youngest of the ten children.-
