Eliza California was born on November 29th, 1866. Eliza California's father was Lewis Newton Donham and her mother was Lydia Catherine Barb. Her paternal grandparents are Peter Donham and Rose Barbe. She had five brothers and seven sisters, named John Gideon Maple, John C.W., Gilbert Montague, Harmon Luther, Lewis Victor, Sarah Rebecca, Helen Clementine, California, Mary Virginia, Hezekiah Elverson, Rosanna Arizona and Amy Orbella. She is the seventh oldest of the thirteen children. She has two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Mark Lucas, Frank Husted and Margaret Udell.-
