John de Somery 
John was born in 1250. John's father was Roger II de Somery and his mother was Annabilia de Chaucombe. His paternal grandparents were Ralph de Somery and Margaret FitzGilbert Marshal; his maternal grandparents are Roger (Robert) de Chaucombe and UNKNOWN Julia. He had a brother and a sister, named Roger III and Joan. He had two half-brothers and six half-sisters, named Ralph, Nicholas, Joan, Cecilia, Mabel, Maud, Margaret (Margery) and Alice.General Notes

"The citadel of Dudley was born out of violence and has brooded over
nearly 1,000 years of troubled history. It has helped to make and break
monarchs, and its lords have included thieves, murderers and traitors as
well as honest noblemen. It was founded in 1071 by the French knight,
Ansculf, who built a crude earth and timber castle on land plundered
during the Norman invasion. It was fortified with stone in 1130 and
survived an attack by King Stephen during his war with his cousin,
Mathilda, for the throne of England. The castle was demolished in 1174
by Henry II after its lord, Gervaise de Paganel, supported a failed
rebellion against him. It remained undefended for 90 years until the de
Somery family received Royal permission to refortify it. The cost of the
work was so great that the evil John de Somery raised the money through
robbery and murder. When he died in 1321, the castle passed to the de
Sutton family who rebuilt the living accommodation and the chapel..."
