Guillaume I was born before 1180. Guillaume I's father was Ingelram de Fiennes and his mother is Sibyl de Boulogne. His paternal grandparents were Eustace II de Fiennes and Margaret de Guines; his maternal grandfather was Faramus de Boulogne and his maternal grandmother is Beatrix de Guines. He was an only child.
