Mahala was born in 1851. Mahala's father was Jacob Shafer and her mother was Jane Catherine Gincie Harper. Her paternal grandparents were John Shafer and Mary Cox; her maternal grandparents were John A. Harper and Rachel Taylor. She had a brother and a sister, named Isaac and Susan Jane. She was the second oldest of the three children. She died at the age of 92 on December 25th, 1943. She was buried in Jacob Shaver Cemetery, Rambler Ridge, Roane, West Virginia.General Notes
