In the 1860 Census of Bruce Township in La Salle County, Illinois there
is also listed an Ellen Quaif age 17 born in New York who is a servant
(hired-girl) of a farm neighbor of William Quaif-Could Ellen be his
younger sister or daughter?
There is a John A Quaif born in about 1819 Robert Quaif born in about
1821 and a Samuel Quaif born in about 1820 both born in England and
living in Cooperstown, Otsego County, New York in 1850-1880 US Federal
Census Records.
Could this William Quaif be the same as listed on a passenger list
submitted by Julie Sandland on the Quaife Message Board at
www.rootsweb.com on 8-7-2005?: "Ship Xenophon sailed from London to New
York, arriving July 25, 1826. Many of the passengers were from Kent,
England, and settled in Chautauqua, NY-Erie, PA area." Here is a QUAIFE
family:
QUAIFE Ann age 2
Grace 36
John 7
Timer 10
Walter 8
William 4 (my note: This would be the right age for William
who was born in about 1822. Notice no adult male so Grace was probably a
widow and may have traveled with other relatives to America. Note also
that there is no Ellen listed in this family group.)
