His paternal grandparents were Siegfried of Luxemburg and Hedwig von Nordgau; his maternal grandparents are Heribert von Gleiburg of Wettergau and Ermentrude of Avalgau. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Frederick II of, Henry II of, Ogive (Otgiva) of, Ermentrude of, Jutta (Imagi) and Gisele. He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
