Walter was born about 1110 in Salop.  Walter's father was Alan FitzFleald and his mother was Aveline de Hesdin.  His paternal grandfather was Flaald (Fledaldus) FitzAlan of Dol; his maternal grandfather is Warine of Shropshire. He had two brothers named William and Simon (Jordon).  He was the youngest of the three children.  He died in 1177.

‌Walter and Eschina de Londoniis were married in a religious ceremony about 1162.  They had a son named Alan.
