William was born in 1797 in Lenoir County, North Carolina.  William's father was John Dawson and his mother was Sally Herring.  He was an only child.  He died at the age of 83 in 1880 in North Carolina.

They had six sons and two daughters, named Alexander, William M., George, Amos Moore, Edward, Simon, Eliza and Elizabeth.
