John A. was born in 1833. John A.'s father was Emanuel Henry Custer and his mother was Matilda P. Viers. His paternal grandparents were John Custer and Catherine Valentine. He has two brothers and a sister, named James, Brice William and Hannah. He had four half-brothers and a half-sister, named George Armstrong, Nevin Johnson, Boston, Thomas W. and Margaret.-
